National Cadet Biathlon Championships 2008

    ST-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, QC, March 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Quebec City will host
the twenty-first National Cadet Biathlon Championships from March 9 to
March 15 at the Myriam Bédard Biathlon Centre at Canadian Forces Base
Valcartier. This national competition will bring together 138 cadet biathlon
athletes from all across Canada, including 18 cadets representing Quebec and
the Ottawa Valley.
Cadets in the Canadian Cadet Program have access to biathlon training
facilities where they can be introduced to and practise this sport. The CF
provides coaching and all the equipment needed to participate in biathlon free
of charge. In Quebec, the Cadet Program allows over 3,000 young people to be
introduced to, and participate in, the challenging sport of biathlon every
year.
The biathlon program within the Cadet Program has produced several
national, international, and Olympic-calibre athletes, including Martine
Albert, who competed in the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy, and
Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, who had his first Olympic experience at these same
Games and who currently ranks among the top 30 in World Cup standings. And who
could forget Myriam Bédard, double gold medalist at the 1994 Olympic Games in
Lillehammer, Norway?

The Cadet Program is a youth program run in partnership with the Navy
League, the Army Cadet League, the Air Cadet League, and the Canadian Forces.
It is free and open to young people from ages 12 to 18 who are interested in
testing their limits through a host of interesting and challenging activities.
In Quebec and the Ottawa Valley, membership in the program is at
13,500 cadets. These young people are guided and supervised by 1,300 Cadet
Instructor Cadre officers with the support of over 5,000 volunteers from the
communities that host some 258 cadet corps.

Media representatives and the public are invited to attend the
competitions at the Myriam Bédard Centre, which will be held March 11, 13 and
March 14, from 9 AM to 4 PM.
