MONTREAL, June 19 /CNW Telbec/ - With many Montreal cultural community
representatives on hand for the occasion, the program of the Week-ends du
Monde, an event designed to allow the public to discover the city's cultural
diversity through music, dance and fine food, was announced today. This free
event, presented by Loto-Québec, is being held at Parc Jean-Drapeau, from July
17 to 26.
More than a dozen cultural communities will be sharing the various sites
for a series of activities that extend over two weekends. Comedian and host
Normand Brathwaite has been granted the honour of launching the Week-ends du
Monde on July 17, when the entire crew of the Tournée Belle et Bum will be at
Parc Jean-Drapeau, along with an array of well-known artists and groups from
the various cultural communities.
"The Week-ends du Monde event is marking its fifth anniversary this year,
and more than ever this great celebration of Montreal's cultural diversity
will be a meeting place for the mingling of cultures," stated Serge Rémillard,
Chairman of the board of Société du parc Jean-Drapeau. "In fact, one of the
distinctive features of the 2009 Week-ends du monde is that we will be
welcoming up to three communities per day on three outdoor stages spread out
over the site. This new format will add to the visitors' overall enjoyment and
promote exchange among the participating communities."
A passport to discovery
See, hear, feel, taste, dance and share...to expand your horizons! This
is what awaits the thousands of visitors who will be coming to discover the
world, just a stone's throw from downtown Montreal. Along with the diverse
program offered by the two weekends, Thursday evening, July 23, will feature a
Rendez-vous classique with the Montreal Chamber Orchestra, which will be
accompanying Quebec soprano Marie-Josée Lord. This concert will be preceded by
a number of classical music performances in various venues on the site.
"Expo '67 world fair staged on the site of Parc Jean-Drapeau, was the
catalyst for the multicultural Montreal that we see today," remarked Marcel
Tremblay, a City of Montreal Executive Committee member, responsible for
cultural communities and Parc Jean-Drapeau's development. "More than 40 years
later, the cultural wealth of our city is inestimable, and this why I find it
invigorating to see that the site of Expo '67 is able to continue to play a
major role in enhancing the visibility of the different cultures that make up
our city, and it is doing this through the Week-ends du Monde."
The Week-ends du Monde au parc Jean-Drapeau are presented by Loto-Québec
in collaboration with Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Caravane glacée, Radio-Classique
99,5, Berger, Virgin 96, Energie 94,3, Rock-Détente 107,3, TVA, MétroMedia
