MTS Allstream: celebrating Earth Day 2009 and taking action to reduce environmental impact

    Stock Symbol: MBT

WINNIPEG, April 22 /CNW/ - MTS Allstream Inc. ("MTS Allstream") is proud
to participate in Earth Day 2009, giving employees an opportunity to take
environmental action and make a contribution to local schools at the same
time.
"MTS Allstream is widely recognized across Canada as a socially and
environmentally responsible company," said Pierre Blouin, Chief Executive
Officer, MTS Allstream. "Our commitment to the environment means that we
strive to reduce our collective carbon footprint, take green action in our
business operations and help our customers, employees and stakeholders do the
same. This is something that is very important to the way we do business."
As part of Earth Day celebrations, MTS Allstream employees will be
participating in an office supply exchange, where employees across the country
will clear out their desks of nearly-new, unneeded office supplies. These
supplies will be made available to all employees, reducing the need to order
new supplies, and reducing and reusing resources that may otherwise end up in
a landfill. All remaining supplies will be donated to schools for the start of
the 2009-2010 school year.
In addition, as a member of the One Million Acts of Green initiative, MTS
Allstream employees have contributed over 15,000 Acts of Green towards the
goal. An Act of Green can be a simple, everyday task like turning the lights
off when you exit a room or taking public transportation to work, or something
more complex like green home renovations. To date, the One Million Acts of
Green initiative has saved over 83 million kilograms of greenhouse gas.
MTS Allstream participates in ongoing initiatives and projects to meet
its environmental commitment, many of which are reflected in the company's
Green Plan. Constructing and upgrading office buildings to be more energy
efficient, introducing a no-idling policy for fleet vehicles, purchasing
hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles, and implementing comprehensive office recycling
programs are just some of the ways that MTS Allstream is taking action.
MTS Allstream is also committed to helping its customers make positive
differences for the environment. Cell phone, battery, charger and headset
recycling is available at all MTS Connect(TM) stores in Manitoba. E-billing
initiatives are reducing the use of paper, and the Workplace 2.0 tele-working
program is being used by MTS Allstream customers and employees to telecommute
and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
