TORONTO, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - Canadian publishers McClelland & Stewart
announced today that Booker Prize-winning author, Margaret Atwood, will embark
on a performance-based tour spanning six cities across Canada and five
countries around the globe, including the UK, US, Germany and Sweden, to
launch her highly anticipated novel, The Year of the Flood (on-sale September
8, 2009).
The Year of the Flood is a brilliant visionary imagining of a
post-apocalyptic future first glimpsed in Oryx and Crake. The world it
describes is as familiar as it is haunting and strange. Dark, tender, violent,
thoughtful and witty, The Year of the Flood tells of the time leading up to a
pandemic and what happens after, focusing on a small group of survivors.
In an effort to break away from the traditional book tour, Atwood has
penned a semi-dramatic theatrical performance based on her new novel. Complete
with three actors, and choir which will perform the original score by Los
Angeles composer, Orville Stoeber, the one-hour innovative performance
promises to be highly entertaining and unlike anything done before.
Commissioned by Atwood to create a score for the original hymns that appear in
her novel, Stoeber has produced rich, melodic and stirring interpretation, and
the resulting CD is destined to become popular in its own right.
Canadian director Alisa Palmer will lead Atwood and the cast, and
composer Stoeber will conduct the choir in the Toronto performance, to take
place on September 24. Atwood will act as narrator in each city and, in order
to reduce the carbon footprint of a traveling cast, will utilize local actors
and choirs. Five of the six cites in the Canadian tour will be fundraisers for
Nature Canada, which Kingston Ontario will donate proceeds to the Community
Harvest Working Group.
Atwood says: "There have been many challenges, but it's a chance to break
free from the traditional structure of a book tour. I felt this particular
novel deserved a more complex presentation. It's also a great chance to work
with other creative minds and see their interpretation of the story come to
light."
In addition to the tour, Atwood has spent months working with Scott
Thornley + Company to design a stunning, interactive website that will include
international tour dates, reviews, swag (including uniquely designed hemp
t-shirts) and music from the performance. Atwood's personal tour blog will
also be posted exclusively on the site, as will information about
environmental partners. The website is now live at www.yearoftheflood.com
Margaret Atwood's internationally bestselling fiction includes The
Handmaid's Tale, Alias Grace, The Blind Assassin, and Oryx and Crake. She has
received numerous awards and honours, including the Booker Prize, The Giller
Prize and the Governor General's Award.
