TORONTO, June 5 /CNW/ - Carole Adriaans, Event Director for arts
organization MusicaNoir, learned yesterday that Ms. Madikizela-Mandela has
been denied access by the federal government to enter Canada and will not be
able to travel to Canada to attend the previously scheduled A Night in Soweto
fundraising gala concert and dinner to be held in Toronto today, Tuesday,
June 5 for MusicaNoir.
According to her office, Ms. Mandela was packed today and ready to travel
to the airport with her daughter (Zindzi Mandela, the daughter of Nelson
Mandela and his former wife Winnie) when she was informed that her visa had
been denied by the Canadian Embassy in South Africa. Her staff reported that
Ms. Mandela was devastated by the decision of the Canadian government
especially in light of the fact that Ms. Mandela was in New York City just two
weeks ago accepting an award for her work with AIDS and the Save Africa
Concerts Foundation affiliated with the United Nations.
Although MusicaNoir is extremely disappointed that Ms Mandela was denied
access to Canada, the gala will continue as planned on Tuesday, June 5th.
MusicaNoir is pleased to announce special celebrity guest LeVar Burton, an
African-American actor, director and author who first came to prominence
playing Kunta Kinte in the 1977 award-winning television miniseries Roots,
based on the novel by Alex Haley. He is best known for his role of Geordi La
Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He is a huge fan of the work of
Bongani Ndodana Breen, Artistic Director of MusicaNoir, and is thrilled to be
able to speak at this event, as he is an avid supporter.
As a director, his first foray into the world of theatrical film
direction was a notable success. Not only did 2003's Blizzard garner him a
"Best of Fest" award from the Chicago International Children's Film Festival,
but he also picked up a Genie Award nomination for his work on the film's
theme song, "Center of My Heart." He will be flying in from Los Angeles
tomorrow Tuesday morning to be at the event.
MusicaNoir is still ready to present The Passion of Winnie as part of the
Toronto's Luminato Festival which is set to premiere this Friday, June 8th at
