Moving Ontario Forward By Inspiring Children To Get Moving

Ontario Liberals Will Invest $10 Million Annually To Make Quest For Gold
    Permanent

SCARBOROUGH, ON, Sept. 22 /CNW/ - Supporting Ontario's athletes helps
them reach their goals and helps inspire young Ontarians to live active,
healthy, positive lifestyles, Premier Dalton McGuinty told a crowd at Variety
Village this morning.
"Quest for Gold helps our athletes make their Olympic and Paralympic
dreams a reality, while inspiring children to pursue their own dreams,"
Premier McGuinty said. "So, when we invest in you, we're really investing in
our children."
Ontario's Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance Program reaches nearly 1,000
of Ontario's top athletes each year, supporting them as they represent Ontario
and Canada at both national and international competitions. If re-elected, the
Ontario Liberals will invest $10 million a year to make funding for Quest for
Gold permanent.
"This is a significant moment in Ontario's sport history," said Dr.
Michael Murphy, chair of the Sport Alliance of Ontario. "It puts funds where
they are needed most, in the hands of the athletes and coaches, to enable them
to maximize their potential and continue their quest for gold."
The new $10 million permanent investment will:

    - Provide Ontario's national and provincial carded elite athletes with
stable funding of up to $8,000 each. This helps them cover the costs
of coaching, travel to competitions, equipment and entry fees
    - Train and certify more Learning Facilitators who deliver
National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) courses in Ontario
    - Provide coach mentors to work with high performance coaches in
eight sports (four winter/four summer) and conduct mentor workshops
for sports not receiving a full-time mentor
    - Introduce a coach salary support program whereby the Ministry will
match salary contributions from five Provincial Sport /Multi-Sport
Organizations to hire five full-time coaches to work with their high
performance athletes at the provincial and club level
    - Launch an apprenticeship program that will provide Level 2/3
certified coaches with opportunities to work with expert coaches at
        major national and international competitions
    - Invest in a coaching bursary program that will reimburse Ontario
coaches for the cost of participating in NCCP certification courses
        and other coaching programs
    - Increase financial support for the Ontario Games Program.

"Ontario Liberals understand the challenges athletes face as they make
their dreams a reality," said McGuinty. "They show us how to overcome our
challenges and the true meaning of dedication - that's what's really
inspiring."
"Ontario's top athletes inspire our youth to get involved and move
forward to follow their dreams - in sport and beyond."
