Mothers and daughters build bonds and homes at Canada's largest Women Build

Habitat for Humanity Toronto hosts thousands of women builders from
across North America this Mother's Day weekend

TORONTO, May 7 /CNW/ - This Saturday May 9th is the final day of Canada's
largest Habitat for Humanity Women Build event, where nearly 2,000 women have
come together to build homes, and hope, for families living in need. The Women
Build Blitz has been taking place at the Hainford build site near Lawrence
Avenue East and Morningside Road from 8:00AM to 10:00PM every day since Friday
May 1st.
Concluding on Mother's Day weekend with Canada's own soul queen Divine
Brown and the women of the Toronto Police Service, Habitat for Humanity
Toronto will be celebrating the hard work, spirit and solidarity of thousands
of women that have helped to build 16 Energy Star(R) homes for families living
in need.

    Mothers and Daughters Unite

Among the many mothers, daughters and sisters on site this Saturday,
single-mom and new Habitat homeowner Deserei Matthews will be fulfilling her
sweat-equity hours by building alongside hundreds of supportive women. Deserei
and her four children know the cycle of poverty all too well. Deserei manages
to get through day-to-day life holding tight to the vision of finally escaping
a neighbourhood filled with drugs, gang violence and negative influences and
moving into her family's new community. The Matthews-Hope family is grateful
to the thousands of volunteers who have given their time, labour and love to
building their new Habitat home.
Habitat for Humanity Toronto's own Women Build Project Manager, Jenny
Tromanhauser, is proud that her mother will be building with her this
Saturday. "I can't wait to have my mom beside me at the Women Build Blitz! It
will be a memorable experience that we'll share together." says Jenny. "Not
only are we doing something empowering and fun, but we're taking part in a
remarkable event that has never been done before in Toronto."
The Habitat Women Build initiative could not have made it this far
without the generous support of sponsors such as the women of the Toronto
Police Services (TPS). This is an extraordinary group of women that have truly
showcased that their work does not end by just keeping the city of Toronto's
streets safe. To celebrate the closing of this historic Habitat for Humanity
event, Deputy Jane Dick and the TPS crew will lead the hundreds of volunteers
and supporters on site in a horse and flag parade at the end of the build day
at 4:00PM. They will be joined by renowned Canadian soul singer Divine Brown
in a live performance to salute the volunteers.
