SIDNEY, BC, May 26 /CNW/ - Next month, the spectacular $8-million Shaw
Ocean Discovery Centre opens in Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula.
To mark this milestone and to celebrate the significance of the ocean to
the people of the Peninsula, the communities of Sidney, Central Saanich and
North Saanich have planned a month of events: Ocean Discovery Days, from
Thursday June 4th to Saturday July 4th.
Many well-established popular events such as the weekly summer markets,
artists' studio tours and July lst festivities will be incorporating an ocean
discovery theme this year.
A number of new ocean-themed activities are being launched too including
a Clam Chowder Challenge, outdoor concerts, an authors' reading series with
award winning writers, lectures by well-known marine scientists, exhibits
about ocean research, and marine artisan demonstrations.
Many retailers, restaurants and local businesses throughout the Peninsula
are participating in Ocean Discovery Days with their own special events, menus
and ocean-themed window displays.
"We're really excited about the launch of Ocean Discovery Days," says
Sidney Mayor Larry Cross. "The focus on the ocean that surrounds us, sustains
us and inspires us is a great way to kick off the start of the summer season
and the many fun family activities here on the Saanich Peninsula," he said.
Ocean Discovery Days start on Thursday, June 4th with the opening of the
Sidney Market and a parade to celebrate the market's 10th year of operation. A
clam chowder competition featuring local restaurants will help the festivities
On Saturday, June 20th, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre opens with an
afternoon of family fun and special guests.
The following weekend, on Sunday, June 28th, the Lieutenant Governor of
BC, the Honourable Steven L. Point attends the dedication of the new Pavilion
in Sidney's Beacon Park. These festivities include outdoor concerts and a
variety of children's activities.
Ocean Discovery Days concludes with Sidney Days, a festival encompassing
a grand Canada Day parade, pancake breakfast, boat building contest,
fireworks, track and field events and a myriad of family-focused activities.
Joan Eaglesham heads up the Ocean Discovery Days celebrations. "We've had
a lot of support from Sidney, Central Saanich and North Saanich, Tourism
Vancouver Island and the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, as well as great
contributions from a host of volunteers and community organizations," she
said. "We hope Ocean Discovery Days will become an annual event to encourage
people to visit the Peninsula. We know this is a great place to live - now we
want people to know it is a great place to visit too," she said.
