Mitsubishi commits to long term support of Canada's national varsity athletes

A working partnership with Canadian Interuniversity Sport flexes friendly
    muscle

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 9 /CNW/ - Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc.
(MMSCAN) have today announced a new three-year sponsorship agreement with
Canadian Interuniversity Sport, set to kick off during the 2008 CIS winter
championship season
The agreement, in excess of one million dollars, ties in to all CIS
championships and many other CIS activities and initiatives such as the
All-Canadian program and the weekly national rankings (Top Ten Tuesday).
Mitsubishi becomes a major partner of CIS sports, the presenting sponsor of
all CIS championships and, along with Desjardins, a major partner in CIS
television programming.
In addition, Mitsubishi and CIS will launch the Go Far Award, recognizing
athletes that have overcome adversity or unforeseen challenges to excel in
their sport and motivate others. The Go Far Award will be provided to the
athlete from each National University Championship that illustrated the most
perseverance to succeed and inspired those around them to achieve more. The
nominations will be requested of each coach and be contributed to by members
of each team.
"We have entered into a long term association with CIS which allows us to
play a worthwhile supporting role in the country wide CIS championships," said
Larry Futers, Director of National Marketing for MMSCAN "And we are very
pleased to be involved in helping to raise the public profile of university
sport and overall athleticism. At Mitsubishi we view ourselves as an athletic
brand, and the positive association with such noble competition can only
enhance the prospects of all involved."
Mitsubishi and CIS will partner in supporting nineteen CIS championships
in 2008, and agreements are in place to continue this partnership through 2010
and beyond.
"Mitsubishi is a great, young brand that is very attractive to the
university market," commented CIS Director of Marketing, Peter Metuzals.
"Their support will help grow the CIS brand and help CIS further pursue its
primary objective of enhancing television coverage and webcast of key events."
With nearly 10,000 student athletes, 550 coaches and 11 separate sport
disciplines, CUAC competitions are held throughout Canada and touch every
major market. Games are often played before large crowds and viewed by an ever
growing national television audience. During the 2006-07 season in excess of
2 million fans tuned into CIS events ranging from local rivalries to the
nationally televised Vanier Cup. In 2008, Mitsubishi and CIS will present
several national telecasts which will showcase the majority of CIS's National
Championship Finals and Semi-Finals. And Mitsubishi will work throughout the
year, with CIS and various other media partners to amplify the profile of
amateur and varsity sports in Canada.
"Our involvement with amateur sport is not going to be arms length"
continued Futers, "we are in this for the long term and intend to interact
with young athletes in a variety of ways, and through a variety of media,
including the internet and through associations with specialty communicators
like TSN, RDS, Sportsnet and The Score."
It is Mitsubishi's intent to showcase some of Canada's best varsity
talent with features like the Mitsubishi Motors Player of the Game, The CIS
All-Canadian, Top Ten Tuesday's, and in concert with CIS the Go Far Award
recognizing athletes that have overcome adversity or unforeseen challenges to
excel in their sport and motivate others. Additionally, Mitsubishi will be
offering exclusive vehicle purchase discounts to all varsity athletes, to
reward them for being an important part of their University and for excelling
in their chosen sport.
