MONTREAL, June 21 /CNW/ - After four years of proving there can be a
successful alternative to the status quo, the founders of MightyBids.com today
announced that their much-praised company is itself to be auctioned off to the
highest bidder. More surprisingly is the avenue Peter Michaud and Jeff
Ramaglia have chosen to take for the MightyBids.com sale.
"We're listing it on eBay," Peter Michaud said. "We figure it's the least
we can do to show it was all in good fun. Mostly." Michaud's "good fun" is in
reference to repeated MightyBids.com criticism of eBay's continual rate and
fee hikes. Using vehicles such as the eBay Food Drive, MightyBids.com has
called attention to what they feel has been a policy of profit over people at
the online auction giant's corporate headquarters.
Ramaglia says the decision to sell MightyBids.com was not one made
lightly, but that he and Michaud are both certain it's the best thing to do. A
blitz of media attention enjoyed just after MightyBids.com's fourth
anniversary saw traffic to the site surge to new record numbers. Ramaglia says
that jump in users helped the duo realize two things.
"Firstly, we had the satisfaction of knowing we accomplished what we set
out to do. We developed a stable, successful online auction service that let
buyers and sellers escape the fees and annoyances of the other place. Second,
we realised that was all we'd set out to do."
With other projects already gaining momentum, Michaud and Ramaglia
decided it was better to sell MightyBids.com outright, rather than try to run
it without their full, hands-on attention. Their decision to list the company
for sale on eBay, Michaud says, was an easy one to make.
"It seemed perfect to me," Michaud says. "After all we put them through,
here's a little going-away present from us to you. We're not a rare Beanie
Baby or a fake pair of Prada shoes, so now we can see what eBay's really good
Bidding in the ten-day auction for MightyBids.com will begin at $1.00,
though Michaud says he's hoping the final bid will be considerably higher.
"Let's face it," Michaud quipped, "After eBay's insertion fees, upgrade
fees, reserve fees and final value fees, there might not be much left for us."
