Michener Opens its Doors to Toronto

De-bunking Health Care Myths in the Discovery District

TORONTO, May 20 /CNW/ - Experience the real Grey's Anatomy and CSI at the
Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences during Doors Open Toronto 2009,
on May 23 and 24, 2009. We'll be de-bunking popular myths about health care
and providing visitors with a snapshot of what it's really like to work in
health care.
The Michener Institute is participating in Doors Open for the first time
in the event's 10 year history. Visitors will learn more about health care and
discover how medical technologists, therapists and practitioners enhance
patient health every day.
Some of the interactive displays will let visitors examine specimens
under a microscope, learn about DNA analysis techniques, and participate in
demonstrations with students and faculty. There will also be health care
displays, self-guided tours of labs and classrooms, and a kids' zone with
educational activities to inspire learning about the health sciences.
For those who are architecture buffs, Michener's unique 15 storey
vertical campus is an excellent example of "béton brut," or "brutalist" style
architecture. Originally built in 1972 and designed by Bregman & Hamman, the
building is in the beginning stages of a LEEDs eligible retro-fit planned by
architects at Diamond + Schmitt. When the building is finished, Michener's
campus will be a state-of-the-art educational space.
