MONTREAL, June 1 /CNW Telbec/ - The 10th edition of the prestigious
Environment Phenix Award ceremony, which took place in Quebec on May 31,
honoured the METRO reusable bag in the Residual Matter Management category.
The Environment Phenix Awards enable to give recognition for the
outstanding actions made by companies or institutions in favour of natural
patrimony in view of a long-lasting development.
Nearly 2 million reusable grocery bags have been sold since the concept
was launched in January 2006, an indication of just how popular the bags are
with Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Marché Richelieu supermarket consumers as
well as with our Brunet drugstores clientele. Moreover, a portion of the money
raised with the sale of these bags allowed the donation of an amount of
$15,000 to ENvironnement JEUnesse, a non-profit organization whose mission is
to reinforce the development of an environmental conscience and awareness of
critical issues among young people.
With annual sales of close to $11 billion and over 65 000 employees,
METRO INC is a leader in the food industry and pharmacies segments in both
Quebec and Ontario where it operates a network of close to 600 supermarkets
under the Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, A&P, Dominion, Loeb and Food Basics
