Métis applaud McGuinty Government's ongoing commitment to resource benefits sharing

METIS TO SHARE IN TODAY'S ANNOUNCED FUNDING

OTTAWA, April 27 /CNW Telbec/ - Gary Lipinski, President of the Métis
Nation of Ontario, applauded today's announcement by the McGuinty Government
to follow through on its commitment to resource benefits sharing with
Aboriginal communities by setting aside $30 million for the initiative.
"I am pleased that today's announcement ensures that negotiations on
resource benefits sharing discussions will proceed with all Aboriginal
communities, including the Métis. This inclusive approach is welcome news for
the Métis Nation and we look forward to working with the Ontario Government on
this important initiative."
"The Métis people and our communities have a crucial role to play in
harnessing the economic development opportunities that exist in Ontario's
energy, mining, forestry and tourism sectors. The Métis share of funding from
resource benefits sharing will provide the much needed resources to assist our
people and communities to partner with industry and government so that we can
take advantage of the economic opportunities that are available to us" said
President Lipinski.
This announcement builds on an overall Ontario government agenda that
includes partnering with Aboriginal peoples to foster economic development
opportunities and self-sustainability. This agenda includes the proposed Green
Energy Act and the modernization of the Mining Act. In the March 2009 Budget,
the province also announced its ongoing commitment to the New Relationship
Fund, which will assist the Métis Nation in building core consultation
capacity at the local, regional and provincial levels in order to more
effectively work with government and industry.
President Lipinski added, "Today's announcement builds on the commitments
made last November when the Ontario Government signed the MNO-Ontario
Framework Agreement. We look forward to being able to announce the details on
how Métis communities will benefit from resource benefits sharing in the Fall
of 2009"
