SEPT-ILES, QC, Feb. 18 /CNW Telbec/ - The 154 workers of Métallurgie
Brasco Entretien in Sept-Iles have just joined the ranks of the United
Steelworkers (FTQ). The Commission des relations de travail du Québec (CRT)
has just certified this group of workers. We remind the reader that an
application for certification was filed with the CRT on November 11, 2007 and
was contested by the employer. "We will convene the workers to a general
meeting to elect a union executive as well as a bargaining committee to start
negotiations for the first collective agreement. Many things need to be
improved, including benefits, which are non-existent, and several health and
safety issues which affect the working conditions. We also need to take steps
to put an end to the favouritism that seems to exist in this company, as is
often the case in non-unionized workplaces," declared Réal Valiquette,
Coordinator, United Steelworkers (FTQ).
It should be remembered that the latest hearings took place from
January 28 to 31, and they shed some light on the employer's claims. The
employer was asking to include a group of 24 workers on a call-out list.
However, they had already left the company at the time of the filing of the
application for certification, with no possibility of returning to work.
Furthermore, some workers claimed to have signed their membership cards
under false representation and without true consent. "The CRT believed that
those people were fully aware and consenting, and that they changed their
minds after the application was filed, which is prohibited by the Labour Code.
If that were allowed, all the employers would do it, it would be too easy. The
CRT did not uphold any of the complaints concerning intimidation or claims of
threats. This was an exemplary unionization campaign," Réal Valiquette
"These new members of local section 7065 of the United Steelworkers (FTQ)
have made the right choice. They performed a courageous act in signing their
cards. Now they have the tools they need to earn respect," the Coordinator
Métallurgie Brasco is a sub-contractor for the maintenance and relining
of electrolysis cells at Aluminerie Alouette in Sept-Iles.
