Mercedes-Benz Canada reports best year ever and breaks multiple all-time sales records in 2007

    TORONTO, Jan. 3 /CNW/ - Mercedes-Benz Canada reported today several
all-time sales records for 2007 including the best ever full-year sales
results at 18,547 units, ahead by 980 units, an increase of 5.6% for combined
Mercedes-Benz, smart and Maybach deliveries over last year.
    Overall Mercedes-Benz sales were up by 10.8% with a gain of 1,570 units
for an impressive best ever year total of 16,114 units. Passenger car sales
also generated best ever year-end results with 11,991 units which accounted
for 1,259 additional units or an 11.7% improvement. smart reported the sale of
2,433 fortwos in 2007; the second generation models only went on sale as of
mid-December of this year.
    The December retail deliveries consisted of 1,412 Mercedes-Benz units and
245 smart fortwos for the month. On a combined brand basis, Mercedes-Benz and
smart reported December sales of 1,657 units, up by 5.9%. December's success
was based on unwavering B-Class, C-Class, E- Class and M-Class sales. The 245
smart fortwos retailed in December accounted for a 240% increase against the
2006 results.
    On the luxury light truck side, the M-Class, R-Class and GL-Class
continued to do extremely well in December with a 12.2% gain and achieved
combined year-end sales of 4,123 units, up by 8.2% or 311 units.
    On the pre-owned side, Mercedes-Benz Canada reported a best ever December
with 431 units, ahead by 11.1%, as well as another record-breaking pre-owned
sales result of 6,327 units for the year, up by 333 units or 5.6%.
    Looking back at 2007, it was a year of monthly records. Mercedes-Benz
Canada's steady momentum can be attributed to an extensive and highly
desirable product offering and solid model positioning, competitive rates and
programs, and an extremely dedicated dealer network.
    The highly successful launch of the All-New 2008 C-Class in September was
further celebrated in December when the Automotive Journalists Association of
Canada named the C-Class its Best New Luxury Car for 2008. Not surprisingly,
more than 1,500 units have been retailed in only four months. The 2008 C300
and C350 models boast a wider and more aggressive stance for superior
aerodynamics, new engineering standards, a long list of standard equipment and
outstanding ergonomic design. Its new AGILITY CONTROL sport suspension helps
perfect the pleasure of handling and makes the All-New C-Class more
exhilarating than ever to drive.
    While the official sales of the second generation smart fortwo only began
in the middle of December; there was a huge amount of pre-launch activities
that took place in all dealerships around the country for several months. The
2008 smart Cross-Canada Test Drive Tour traveled to seven major cities in
Canada and generated thousands of test drives for existing customers and
potential customers alike. Many pre-sold orders were prompted by these various
programs.
    Important sales results were achieved throughout the year: a
record-breaking 3,035 B-Class models were sold, despite a September launch,
the C-Class generated almost 3,800 sales, up by 19% - a spectacular
achievement that bodes extremely well for 2008, E-Class sales were ahead of
2006 by almost 40% while the S-Class maintained its enviable industry lead in
the high-end luxury category. The new CL-Class posted a 353% increase over
last year while the M-Class and the GL-Class showed 24% and 98% gains,
respectively.
    Mercedes-Benz Canada's E320 BLUETEC diesel sedan and its ML320 CDI, GL320
CDI and R320 CDI diesel SUV models continued to sell at an unwavering monthly
rate. The E320 BLUETEC's cleanest diesel technology hovered around the 18-20%
mark of overall E-Class sales while the diesel SUVs represented 48-50% of the
combined light truck sales over the course of the year. The total tally of
diesel sales was just short of 3,000 units in 2007.
    The award-winning 4MATIC(TM) is Mercedes-Benz' permanent all-wheel-drive
system that delivers optimal traction, whatever the road condition, for
maximum confidence and handling control. Available in three sedan classes,
(C-, E- and S-Class) and in all SUV classes (M-, R-, GL- and G-Class), it has
become an integral part of Mercedes-Benz Canada's sales success stories. A
ratio of 55% C-Class, 79% E-Class and 85% S-Class are now sold as 4MATIC(TM)
models. Total 4MATIC(TM) volume represented an overwhelming 54% of overall
2007 sales across all model lines this year.
    Mercedes-Benz Canada's commitment to customer focus further intensified
in 2007. While quality and technological leadership continue to be crucial for
Mercedes-Benz, it is important to re-iterate that Customer Satisfaction
remains the company's primary mandate. Consequently, a process optimization
initiative called the Mercedes-Benz Excellence Program kicked off in 2007. Its
main purpose is to ensure consumer satisfaction at every level of the
corporate and dealership organizations and to maximize an all-encompassing
ownership experience.
    Several facilities held their Grand Opening: Mercedes-Benz Sherbrooke,
Ogilvie Motors in Ottawa and Three Point Motors in Victoria. The brand new
Mercedes-Benz Maple became the seventh retail facility in the Greater Toronto
Area while Mercedes-Benz Barrie and Lone Star Calgary built new facilities in
their markets . An extensive expansion and complete overhaul of the
strategically located Mercedes-Benz Downtown location is underway and will be
completed on time in mid-2008.
    President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada, Marcus Breitschwerdt,
