Retail Council of Canada honours flagship store's fashionably innovative
TORONTO, June 12 /CNW/ - On June 4, the Retail Council of Canada (RCC)
awarded fashion retailer Mendocino the prestigious Excellence in Retailing
Award, in Retail Store Design. The award was given in recognition of their
flagship store in downtown Toronto, which was designed by Perennial Inc., one
of Canada's leading retail design firms.
The RCC's ERA awards are presented to retailers that create an innovative
and visually enticing design and layout for their stores, thereby giving their
customers an optimum shopping experience.
When Mendocino secured a prime location in Toronto's high-fashion
Yorkville shopping district, owners Jan Kaplan and Norma Caron enlisted
Perennial to help bring clarity to their brand positioning, and create a
concept that would capture their unique vision in this new retail environment.
"Mendocino is all about uncompromising, of-the-moment style combined with
extraordinary customer service. Our goal was to use design to bring that brand
promise, and Mendocino's eclectic character, to life," explains Donna Lawson,
Director of Environmental Design at Perennial.
By combining both modern and "raw" materials, and juxtaposing new against
old, lead designer Nadia Cannataro was able to capture the nuances of the
Mendocino brand and appeal to the discriminating tastes of their fashion-savvy
The new design also allows Mendocino to deliver on their promise of high
quality customer service. With strategic touches like carefully considered
placement of fitting rooms and flexible merchandising solutions, the plan
allows the retailer to heighten their position as fashion advisors, and
refresh the look of their store weekly, ensuring an exciting and satisfying
experience for all their customers, all the time.
