Media Statement by Michael Caroline, legal counsel for Charis Newton-Thompson and Stan Gordon

TORONTO, Jan. 10 /CNW/ - In the course of its consultations, the Toronto
School Safety Panel conducted an in-depth investigation into the allegation
that a sexual assault of a female student at school, which had been reported
to the "administrative team," was not reported to the appropriate authorities.
The Panel has rendered a confidential report on this matter, articulating its
findings to the Board.
The Panel has confirmed that neither the teachers, nor the vice-principal
who received the disclosure, reported the allegations of sexual assault to
Ms. Newton-Thompson, or Mr. Gordon.
My clients learned of the sexual assault for the first time in June 2007,
when the Panel received information about the disclosure from a teacher.
In light of this, the charges under the Child and Family Services Act
cannot be sustained and I am confident that they will either be withdrawn or
successfully defended.
