Media Invitation - Simulated campus attacks to exercise Toronto emergency services and hospital capabilities

TORONTO, March 22 /CNW/ - Toronto's Emergency Services are working
cooperatively with their community hospital partners in exercising their
policy and procedures in dealing with mass casualties. On Saturday, March 24,
a simulated terrorist incident at a Centennial College campus will exercise
the City of Toronto Emergency Service providers, as well as emergency and
hospital staff who will have to treat up to 200 victims.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada's largest trauma centre, will
run the simulated hospital located at the Centennial HP Science and Technology
Centre. The exercise will involve staff from the Toronto Police Service and
the City of Toronto Fire, EMS and Public Health departments.
The realistic simulation is a co-production of the IDEAS Network, which
promotes interprofessional collaboration and team building to deliver safe and
effective victim-centred practice. Students from Centennial and George Brown
College, The Michener Institute, Ryerson and the University of Toronto will
play various roles in the exercise.
The IDEAS Network, which is comprised of the participating colleges and
universities, makes use of "sandboxes" or simulated environments to test and
evaluate community disaster response plans. In this case, Centennial's applied
research and information technology resources, as well as its simulated
hospital facilities, provide the setting.
Media are invited to witness this unique exercise and speak with
participants. For more details, visit: www.ideasnetwork.ca.
