TORONTO, Sept. 12 /CNW/ - Electors qualified to vote in the October 10,
2007 general election and referendum who are unable to cast their ballots in
person on Election and Referendum Day or at an Advance Poll, may apply to vote
by proxy. Proxy voting allows voters to appoint another elector in the
electoral district to vote on their behalf.
Persons who ceased to live in Ontario within the two years prior to
Election and Referendum Day and whose last residence was in Ontario may be
entitled to vote under certain conditions. Contact Elections Ontario for more
An elector may not act as a proxy voter for more than two electors. To
receive a Certificate to Vote on behalf of the elector appointing the proxy,
the application, along with appropriate ID must be provided to a member of the
Returning Officer's staff before 8:00 p.m. on October 9, 2007 - the day before
Election and Referendum Day. The proxy voter must then show ID at the poll and
present the Certificate to Vote to receive the two ballots for the elector on
whose behalf they are voting.
A proxy voter may apply to have his or her name transferred to the poll
where the proxy vote is to be cast or, in turn, to transfer the name of the
voter appointing the proxy to their own poll.
Applications to vote by proxy can be obtained from a returning office or
downloaded from the Elections Ontario website at www.elections.on.ca.
To be eligible to vote, on polling day a person must be:
- 18 years of age or older,
- a Canadian citizen, and
- a resident of an electoral district in Ontario.
