Media Alert/Interview Advisory - Surging student population means enrollment challenges for limited university spaces in Ontario

TORONTO, Nov. 6 /CNW/ - The demographic dilemma facing provincial high
school students graduating in 2008 means limited spaces for post-secondary
education. The rapid rise in enrollment is challenging Ontario's
post-secondary institutions to accept all applicants and offer opportunities
for a quality educational experience. There is another option...
Dr. Robert Campbell, president and vice-chancellor of Mount Allison
(Sackville, NB., www.mta.ca) -- consistently ranked one of Canada's top three
universities by Maclean's -- will visit Toronto to discuss the challenges
facing educational institutions and why Ontario students should consider
out-of-province opportunities.

    Current statistics show:

    - In 2006-7 an all-time high of 357,000 students attended university in
        Ontario

    - The student population is expected to grow by almost 50 per cent
within the decade; 120,000 more are expected to graduate by 2021

    - The demand will mean a reduced quality of education, larger classes,
fewer instructors, substandard or a lack of facilities

    - Mount A 2007 students number 2,245 with a 15:1 student to faculty
ratio; the school allocated $2.25 million towards bursaries in 2007/8
(per capita, exceeding all competition); in 2006, more than 65 per
cent of the entering class were awarded scholarships

WHO: President and vice-chancellor, Dr. Robert Campbell -- author
of nine books and numerous articles on the political
environment in Canada -- is available for interviews and
                commentary

WHEN/WHERE: Dr. Campbell will be in Toronto, available for media
interviews on the afternoon or evening of November 8 or the
morning of November 9; one-on-one appointments are available.
