care the focus of CMA's 143rd annual meeting in Niagara Falls, ON

OTTAWA, Aug. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Medical Association's (CMA) 143rd annual meeting (General Council) will be all about patient-centred care as delegates will converge in Niagara Falls, ON from August 23 to 25, 2010 at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel.

This year's General Council theme is "Change that Works. Care that Lasts".

The key features of the meeting include:

Sunday, Aug. 22nd

  • First educational session led by Dr. John Findley, physician consultant, US Planetree, focusing on quality health care.
  • Second educational session will focus on health care transformation and sustainability featuring Dr. Jack Kitts, CEO of The Ottawa Hospital and Alex Himelfarb, director, Glendon School of Public and International Affairs, York University and former Clerk of the Privy Council of Canada.

Monday, Aug. 23rd

  • Address by the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
  • Strategic session on patient-centred care led by leading patient advocate, Durhane Wong-Reiger.

Tuesday, Aug. 24th

  • Presentation by Canada's Auditor General, Sheila Fraser, on the need to improve accountability and responsibility in the health care system. Fraser will also be available to answer media questions after the session in the press conference room.
  • Delegates' motions.
  • President Dr. Anne Doig's valedictory address.

Wednesday, Aug. 25th

  • Delegates' motions.
  • Incoming President Dr. Jeff Turnbull's inaugural speech.
  • Installation ceremony and CMA Awards presentation.
