Media alert - Federal correctional officers to mark anniversary of firings at Grand Valley institution in Kitchener



    MONTREAL, Jan. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of the Union of Canadian
Correctional Officers will stage an information picket in front of Grand
Valley Institution for Women at 1575 Homer Watson Blvd. in Kitchener, Ontario,
from 6 am to 8 am this Friday, January 16. The date is exactly a year after
three Grand Valley correctional officers were unjustly fired following the
death of inmate Ashley Smith in October 2007.
    The union will distribute a chapter from its report on Correctional
Service Canada's management of inmate Smith, "Rush to Judgment," which had
been withheld on the request of lawyers during the preliminary inquest
examining charges of criminal negligence causing death against three
correctional officers. The charges were dismissed last month.
    The chapter, which will be posted on the union's website
(www.ucco-sacc.csn.qc.ca) Friday morning, describes the events immediately
preceding Ashley Smith's death during the early morning of October 19, 2007.
