Media Alert - Combating STIs at UBC

VANCOUVER, Sept. 13 /CNW/ - It's back to school at the University of
British Columbia (UBC) and this year Trojan has donated 25,000 condoms and
10,000 STI educational brochures to assist with sexual health awareness
initiatives.
Dr. Patricia Mirwaldt, Director of the University of British Columbia
Student Health Services, is available to discuss on-campus sexual health
awareness initiatives that will be implemented this year.
STI rates in Canada have increased so much that experts are calling the
phenomenon a hidden epidemic. In 1997 the rate of gonorrhea and syphilis were
at their lowest since they first began to be reported in the 1920s. Federal
Public Health officials were so pleased with the drop in STIs that they set a
2010 deadline for the elimination of gonorrhea, while syphilis was to be kept
at 0.5 cases per 100,000 people, or below.(1)
Today, ten years later, syphilis is now nine times the rate it was in
1997.(2) According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control the incident rate of
Chlamydia since 2002 has increased at a rate higher then the rest of
Canada.(3) Similarly, the incident rate of Syphilis in B.C. is nearly double
then the rest of the country.(4)
It is vital that young Canadians are aware and informed of the
significant increase in STI incident rates and the effects unprotected sex can
have.
