Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup finds out what Toronto waters are harbouring

Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire Services will recover harmful
debris and litter in Lake Ontario

    TORONTO, Sept. 17 /CNW/ -

WHAT: To help kick off the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup, the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire
Services will dive into Lake Ontario to recover harmful debris
and aquatic litter. This year's dive features the Unit's new
submersible, which allows viewers to see the bottom of
Toronto's harbour. Previous Toronto dives have recovered a
motorcycle, a sewing machine and even a rickshaw. What will
              this year's dive uncover?

WHERE: Little Norway Park - on Lake Ontario at the foot of Bathurst
              Street
Platform on the south-west end of the park by the water

WHO: Roger St. Louis, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the
              Environment Foundation
              John Nightingale, President, Vancouver Aquarium
Tony Maas, Senior Advisor, Freshwater Policy, WWF-Canada

WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals
and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter,
and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates
from land based sources. This year, over 60,000 Canadians will
work together from September 20 to 28 to remove nearly 100
tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the
15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

Torontonians are encouraged to drop by the September 20th
Kick-off Event at Woodbine Beach Park (meeting at the Main
Gazebo) at 10:00 a.m. to help clean the city's shoreline.
