Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - Law Society to present honorary doctorates at Toronto Call to the Bar ceremonies



    TORONTO, June 14 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada will present two
degrees of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), to two distinguished members
of the profession: Barbara L. Jackman, LL.D.; and The Honourable Archie
Campbell, LL.D. (posthumously), at ceremonies to welcome more than 800 of the
province's 1,121 new lawyers at Roy Thompson Hall on June 18 and 19.
    Every year, as part of its Call to the Bar ceremonies, the Law Society
awards honorary doctorates to distinguished persons who exemplify the values
held in esteem by the legal profession. The honours will be presented by Law
Society Treasurer Gavin MacKenzie.
    Barbara L. Jackman specializes in areas of immigration and refugee law.
Throughout her career, she has shown a commitment to the highest ideals of the
legal profession. She has been counsel for the party or an intervener for a
number of important cases, and has been involved in many international human
rights activities. She will serve as keynote speaker at the two Call
ceremonies on June 18.
    The Honourable Justice Archie Campbell was a judge for the Supreme Court
of Ontario and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice from 1986 to the time of
his death in April 2007. A renowned and highly respected jurist, he is fondly
remembered for his devotion, skill and compassion.
    The Honourable R. Roy McMurtry, former Chief Justice of Ontario, will
confer the citation in honour and memory of Justice Campbell, on June 19.
Toronto Lawyer Douglas Hunt, who worked with Justice Campbell on the SARS
Inquiry, will deliver the keynote address.
