Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - Law Society to present honorary doctorate to the Honourable W. Dan Chilcott, Q.C.



    TORONTO, June 12 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada will present a
degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), to the Honourable W. Dan
Chilcott, Q.C., former Superior Court Justice and Law Society Treasurer, at
its Call to the Bar ceremony in London on June 15. Mr. Chilcott will be
recognized for his exemplary career and his tremendous dedication to the
profession.
    The Law Society will call 97 new lawyers to the Ontario Bar at the London
ceremony.
    Each year, as part of its Call ceremony, the Law Society awards an
honorary doctorate to a distinguished person who exemplifies the values held
in esteem by the legal profession. Law Society Treasurer Gavin MacKenzie will
present the honorary LL.D. to Mr. Chilcott, who will then deliver the keynote
address to the new lawyers.
    Called to the Bars of Nova Scotia, Ontario and the Northwest Territories,
Mr. Chilcott began his career as the Senior Assistant Crown Attorney for the
County of Carleton in 1956. In 1958, he entered private practice with the firm
of Binks, Chilcott & Simpson and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1967. First
elected a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1979, Mr. Chilcott was
voted the Society's Treasurer in 1987. He was appointed a justice of the
Superior Court of Justice in 1988 and a Deputy Judge of the Nunavut Court of
Justice in 1999. Mr. Chilcott is currently a member of the Pension Appeals
Board and a Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the North West Territories.
