Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - Law Society to present honorary doctorate to the Honourable Brian W. Lennox, former Chief Justice, Ontario Court of Justice



    TORONTO, June 7 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada will present a
degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), to the Honourable Brian W.
Lennox, former Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, at its Call to
the Bar ceremony in Ottawa on June 12. Justice Lennox will be recognized for
his outstanding achievements in service and benefits to the legal profession,
the rule of law or the cause of justice.
    The Law Society will call 177 new lawyers to the Ontario Bar (17.5 per
cent of whom are Francophone) at the Ottawa ceremony.
    Each year, as part of its call ceremony, the Law Society awards an
honorary doctorate to a distinguished person who exemplifies the values held
in esteem by the legal profession. Law Society Treasurer Gavin MacKenzie will
present the honorary LL.D. to Justice Lennox, who will deliver the keynote
address to the new lawyers.
    The Honourable Brian W. Lennox was Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of
Justice from May 1999 to May 2007 and is currently on secondment with the
National Judicial Institute. Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, he
served as Associate Chief Judge and as a Regional Senior Judge with the Court.
He has practised as a Crown Attorney, and in private practice. As well, he has
been a part-time professor both with the Faculty of Law and with the
Department of Social Sciences (Criminology) at the University of Ottawa. He is
a frequent lecturer in the areas of judicial administration, advocacy and
criminal law and is a lecturer with the Canadian Association of Provincial
Court Judges.
