Media Advisory: Charest Government silent as Harper's feds eliminate Quebec jobs

    Union marches on National Assembly

    QUEBEC CITY, June 18 /CNW/ -

What: The Baker, Confectioners, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers
Union (BCTGM) is demonstrating in front of the National
Assembly calling for Charest Government to weigh in on
amendments to Bill C-32 to protect valuable Quebec jobs

    Where: Front of National Assembly

When: June 18, 2009 at 5 pm EST

    Background:

Bill C-32 is overly broad because it bans the manufacture, sale, import
and export of legitimate blended cigarettes like Gitanes and Gauloises in
Canada.
Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (RBH) imports the tobacco it uses to
manufacture its blended products from the U.S., Mexico, France, Brazil and
Argentina. Therefore the Bill likely violates numerous International trade
laws and agreements.
More importantly however, if this bill is enacted, production at RBH's
Quebec plant will be seriously curtailed. This may cost the jobs of 300 people
in Quebec.
