On Sunday, June 3rd, hundreds of residents of the National Capital Region
will come together to participate in the World Partnership Walk, Canada's
largest annual event to raise funds and increase awareness to fight global
poverty. The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,
will be our Guest of Honour.
The Walk unites tens of thousands of Canadians in nine cities across the
country in a common effort to bring hope and renewal to impoverished
communities in Asia and Africa. Every dollar (100%) goes directly to programs
in the developing world.
On Sunday, participants can expect an experience that is both meaningful
and fun, through activities that inform, educate and entertain. In addition to
the Honourable James K. Bartleman, guests include the Honourable Jim Watson,
Ontario Minister of Health Promotion, representing Ontario Premier Dalton
McGuinty; Councillor Rick Chiarelli, representing Ottawa mayor Larry O'Brien,
along with members of the diplomatic community. Ms. Jerri Southcott, host of
CBC Television's Living in Ottawa, will join us in celebrating this
partnership with the developing world. The theme for the Walk this year is
"making education count". The "Global Village" will feature displays about
Canadian-supported efforts to improve access to education and the quality of
learning in places like Kenya, Tanzania, India and Bangladesh.
Now in its 23rd year, the Walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation
Canada (AKFC), a non-denominational, registered Canadian charity with more
than 25 years of experience finding and sharing effective and lasting
solutions to the challenges of global poverty. The Walk took place last
Sunday, May 27th, in eight other cities attracting some 38,000 participants.
The final tally of funds raised will be release following the Ottawa Walk.
