Media Advisory - With Projects on Six Continents, Renowned Civil Engineer George Vari Speaks to Engineers of Tomorrow



    Dr. Vari Receives Honorary Degree in Engineering from Ryerson University;
    Delivers Engineering Convocation Address, Monday, June 18

    TORONTO, June 15 /CNW/ - On Monday, June 18 at 2:30 p.m., Ryerson
University will confer upon engineer, philanthropist and champion of
education, George Vari, PC, CM, a Doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa. Dr.
Vari will then deliver the Convocation address to the graduating students of
Ryerson's Computing, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering programs.
    For many Ryerson Engineering students, this will not only be the
opportunity to glean insight from the man behind such projects as the Tour
Montparnasse in Paris, the 3,000 room Cosmos Hotel in Moscow and six pavilions
and the theatre at Expo '67 in Montreal, but to encounter the man behind the
Vari Foundation, which helped erect their place of study: the George Vari
Engineering and Computer Centre.
    Dr. Vari is a recipient of the Order of Canada, the 125th Anniversary of
the Foundation of Canada medal and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 50th
Anniversary Jubilee Medal. He is Commander to the Order of St-Grégoire by Pope
Jean-Paul II and has been appointed to the Privy Council of Canada for life.
He is also Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur, France, and
Officier of the Order.

              Vari, PC, CM renowned civil engineer and passionate advocate
              and champion of education

              2:30 p.m. - Convocation ceremony commences

    Media Check-In:

    Space in the media section is limited. Media are asked to check in at the
media desk at 43 Gerrard St. E. between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. TV cameras
must be set up in the theatre no later than 2:15 p.m.

    Media Accreditation:

    Media will be asked to provide credentials for accreditation.
Accreditation is required to attend Convocation and to register for interviews
following the ceremony.
