Media Advisory - WHEN MARKET MEETS MISSION: Social Entrepreneurs Changing the Face of Business in Toronto

TORONTO, Feb. 25 /CNW/ - A new business model is emerging in Toronto that
mixes the dynamic energy of the free market with the social conscience of the
non-profit sector. On March 5, Toronto Mayor David Miller will join
Enterprising Non-Profits Toronto (enp-TO) in granting $100,000 to 16 local
non-profits to help them establish social enterprises.
"We're witnessing the birth of a new type of business," says Tonya
Surman, executive director of the Centre for Social Innovation, the
organization that started the enp-TO program. "Social enterprises have the
capacity to tackle the needs of society that the free market has failed to
address."
Social enterprises are revenue-generating businesses run by
mission-driven non-profit organizations. Because most non-profits are not used
to thinking in terms of profitability, enp-TO will provide grant recipients
with skills training and coaching to help them establish well-planned,
profitable social enterprises.
Join enp-TO director Eli Malinsky, Toronto Mayor David Miller and the
2009 enp-TO grant recipients for an afternoon of exciting and inspiring
interview opportunities.
