    THE STORY:

Hiking, skating, fishing, and snowmobiling on the ice are activities that
many Canadians continue to enjoy as winter winds down and spring begins. But
Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is reminding people that this enjoyment must
be balanced with awareness of the dangers that could exist.
Every year, more than 30 Canadians die in ice-related incidents.
Canadians need to know that while ice is never 100% safe, most ice-related
incidents are predictable and preventable.
IBC recommends that those intending to walk or play on the ice should pay
special attention to determining the thickness of the ice before heading out.
Experts recommend at least 5 inches of clear, solid, blue ice. If the ice
appears slushy, is located on or near moving water, or has thawed and been
refrozen, Canadians should stay off.
