Media Advisory - UN Climate Scientists Warn Canada of Rapid Dramatic Change - IPCC report on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability Released

OTTAWA, April 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of the Climate Action Network
Canada/Réseau action climat Canada (CAN-RAC) will be available for comment
following the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Working Group II Report on Climate Change impacts, adaptation and
vulnerability. Members will speak to specific impacts in Canada and suggest
appropriate policy in line with recommendations contained in this report.

    Background:

The IPCC is mandated to advise the world's governments on the science,
impacts, economics and technology related to climate change. It is a United
Nations body established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is considered
the world's foremost authority on the issue.
IPCC Working Group II Report provides a comprehensive analysis of how
climate change is affecting natural and human systems, what the impacts will
be in the future and how far adaptation and mitigation can reduce these
impacts. The report also contains chapters on specific systems, sectors and
regions.

    Expected Canadian results include:

    - Increased forest fires and a decline in northern forest cover
    - Lower water levels in the great lakes, affecting navigation and
      water quality
    - Earlier sea ice break up, significant water temperature rise, earlier
      spring snowmelt
    - More heat waves and smog in urban areas

    DATE: Friday April 6th, 2007

All day availability for CAN-RAC members.
Report released in Brussels 10am local time, webcast details:
