Greenhouse is a compelling and hopeful film about the transformative
power of youth, community building and conservation in Toronto's social
housing residences. It shows how the enthusiasm of kids and the dedication of
community champions are creating more healthy and sustainable environments.
Greenhouse is part of a Community Champion Program, delivered by SHSC,
Toronto Hydro Electric System and GLOBE This peer-led program, takes a unique
approach to changing behaviour by educating and engaging social housing
residents and staff in activities to help develop a culture of conservation.
The Community Champion enables the residents themselves to become agents of
change in their own communities.
Community Champions and housing staff received energy conservation
training, focused on the importance of resident behaviour. Greenhouse follows
three champions as they promote conservation within their social housing
buildings and to their families.
In addition to the Community Champion Program, in 2007 and 2008, SHSC,
GLOBE and Toronto Hydro Electric System worked together to reduce electricity
demand by 3.805 MW, equivalent to taking close to 2,700 homes off the grid.
