Media advisory - The people speak: report on forestry crisis to be released

THUNDER BAY, Oct. 1 /CNW Telbec/ - The results of public forums on the
forestry crisis in Northern Ontario, sponsored by the Communications, Energy
and Paperworkers Union and the United Steelworkers, will be released at a news
conference this Wednesday, October 3 at 10 am at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder
Bay.
Hearings have been held recently in the hard-hit communities of Thunder
Bay, Dryden, Kapuskasing and Espanola. Some 60 submissions were presented to a
three-person panel by municipal leaders, Aboriginal groups, labour groups,
politicians of all stripes and concerned citizens. The panel included: Rob
Cheethan, Economic Development Officer from Smooth Rock Falls; Michael Power,
mayor of Greenstone; and Jeff Butler, a forestry consultant.
The hearings were a direct result of the Ontario government's refusal to
respond to demands from 17 municipal councils for hearings on the crisis that
is devastating northern communities.
