Media Advisory - The Fraser Institute provides choice of Calgary private schools to 100 students from low-income families

CALGARY, April 23 /CNW/ - One hundred low-income Calgary families will
receive tuition assistance grants from Children First: School Choice Trust
that will allow them to send their children to a school of their choice in
2007-2008. The grants will be presented Tuesday, April 24 during a ceremony at
Lycee Louis Pasteur School.
Children First is a Fraser Institute program, launched in Calgary last
year.
The Children First grants are worth 50 per cent of the cost of tuition at
any one of more than 40 independent schools in Calgary, to an annual maximum
of $2,500. The grants allow parents with children who may need special school
programs to choose from among the number of diverse independent schools in the
Calgary area. The grants are available starting with kindergarten-age children
and are renewable through Grade 6, as long as the family remains eligible.
Average tuition at participating independent schools is $3,400 per year.
Please join Derek Hunter of the Hunter Family Foundation, whose
generosity has helped make the program available in Calgary, at this event
where he will present the tuition assistance grants to the families.
Michael Thomas, Program Director of Children First, along with many
families receiving grants and members of the independent school community will
also be at the event and will be available to speak to interested media.
Along with the total number of families applying for grants, additional
information on the demographic breakdown of applicant families, including
their geographic distribution, and the percentage headed by single parents
will be available.
All interested media are invited to attend.
