Media Advisory - Students' Federation Representatives Available to Comment on HEQCO Research Papers

    TORONTO, July 25 /CNW/ - Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario
Chairperson Shelley Melanson and Researcher James Beaton are available to
comment on the research papers that were released today by the Higher
Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO).
The three papers, commissioned by the Council, were written by
third-parties and report on access to and participation in post-secondary
education, the data needs of Ontario's higher education sector, and
polytechnic education.
High tuition fees, the downloading of the costs of operating the
province's public universities and colleges to students and their families
through loan debt, and insufficient government funding for post-secondary
education continue to be Ontario students' main concerns. This spring,
representatives of the Federation's member local students' unions from across
the province met with Members of Provincial Parliament, staff of the Ministry
of Training, Colleges and Universities and representatives of the HEQCO to
lobby for the:

    - reduction of tuition fees and a corresponding public reinvestment in
colleges and universities to improve access to and the quality of
       post-secondary education;
    - replacement of the debt-based Ontario Student Assistance Program with
a grant-based system of student financial aid to improve participation
in and completion of post-secondary education; and
    - development of a credit-transfer system to save individuals and the
government money by setting standards that would allow students to
easily move between and among public colleges and universities without
being required to duplicate credits they have previously completed.
