NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, March 28 /CNW/ - The opposite of a "Grand Opening",
a "Grand Closing" event on Saturday at the Canfor Panel and Fibre mill will
include the United Steelworkers' (USW) release of a 10-point program to help
the devastated BC forest industry.
The event starts at 12:30 p.m. and there will be speakers. Media and the
public are welcome.
In the last year, more than 10,000 forest industry jobs have been lost in
the province, while the government has sat motionless.
Despite repeated pleas by workers and their union to company and
provincial government leaders to keep the Canfor mill open or facilitate its
sale to another BC operator, there has been no response from Canfor, BC
Premier Gordon Campbell or provincial Forest Minister Rich Coleman.
The plant produced a selection of environmentally friendly products from
