Media Advisory - Sept. 25 McNally Award for Bravery

LONDON, ON, Sept. 24 /CNW/ - During the late morning of October 9th,
2007, Paramedic Sheri Sutherland was driving a First Responder Unit when she
witnessed a full size van crash into the side of a transport truck at Bramalea
and Orenda Roads in Brampton. The van quickly quickly burst into flames with
the unconscious driver trapped inside. After calling for help, Sheri, the lone
paramedic on the vehicle, grabbed the fire extinguisher and gave it to a
bystander to fight the fire. The fire was in the engine area and thick black
smoke was filling the vehicle. Sheri then broke the passenger side window to
gain access, climbed it and removed the patient, all the while exposing
herself to thick black smoke and fire extinguisher powder. The patient later
regained consciousness and was transported to hospital by the responding
ambulance crew. Without her quick and selfless actions, the patient likely
would have succumbed in the fire. "She demonstrated true valour and
compassion, and placed herself in great danger to save the life of another"
noted her supervisor.
Paramedic Sheri Sutherland of Peel Region is a recipient, along with
