PwC survey results on tax burden released
TORONTO, April 29 /CNW/ - On Thursday, May 7, 2009, in Toronto,
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) will be hosting both the launch of its annual
Total Tax Contribution study as well as a panel discussion with senior
executives on the Canadian tax system. Media are invited to join the
presentations and hold one-on-one interviews with the speakers.
The panel discussion features:
- David Stewart-Patterson, Executive Vice President with the Canadian
Council of Chief Executives
- Larry Chapman, Canadian Tax Foundation Executive Director and CEO
- Sherrie Ann Pollack, Tax Executives Institute Regional Vice President
In addition, Tom O'Brien, PwC Tax Partner, will present the results of
the 2008 Total Tax Contribution study. Done in conjunction with Canadian
Council of Chief Executives the study looks at the taxes large businesses in
Canada pay. This year's study expands and complements the prior year study
through incorporation of provincial tax data and expansion of data surrounding
the considerable compliance burden faced by Canadian businesses.
Initial results show:
- Corporate income tax is just one aspect of the tax burden accounting
for only 53% of total taxes paid;
- Companies incur huge compliance costs in dealing with 73 business
taxes and over 280 taxing points, with many of which raise nominal
Government revenues; and
- While Canada's overall total tax rate is competitive internationally,
our complex compliance rules are second to last ahead only of the US.
