Media Advisory - Safe Crossing Week 2008

Parents: Now's the Time! Don't wait for a tragedy

TORONTO, Oct. 15 /CNW/ - On October 20, Safe Kids Canada and CN will
launch Safe Crossing Week 2008, a national educational campaign focused on
keeping Canadian children safe at railway crossings and around trains.
Education is the key to reducing the average 90 deaths that occur each
year in Canada from incidents involving trains. Teaching rail safety to
children at a young age is vital and it is important not only in rural areas
but also in our cities, especially as urban areas expand and houses are built
in more areas near train tracks.
This year, thousands of young students in more than 600 elementary
schools will learn about safety at railway crossings in their classrooms
across the country.
The safety partners are also making an appeal to parents with the theme
Parents: Now's the Time!, calling on parents to talk to their children about
rail crossing safety and about safe behaviour around trains and railway
tracks.
To alert Canadians about the importance of railway crossing safety, Safe
Kids Canada and CN invite media to cover Safe Crossing Week 2008 activities at
locations across Canada from Oct. 20-26, 2008.
A news release will be distributed on this newswire on Monday, Oct. 20,
2008 at 6 a.m. (ET)
