Media Advisory - Retired General Calls On Peter MacKay to "Lead the Charge" Against NATO's Nukes



    OTTAWA, March 30 /CNW Telbec/ - Major-General Leonard V. Johnson (ret.)
will join members of the Canadian Pugwash Group on Monday to urge Foreign
Affairs Minister Peter MacKay to raise the issue of NATO's continued reliance
upon nuclear weapons at an upcoming meeting of the alliance's foreign
ministers.

    Major-General Johnson (ret.) was the Department of National Defence
Associate Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy) and Chief of Evaluation (1978-80)
and Commandant of the National Defence College in Kingston (1980-84).
    Johnson is also a former chair of the Canadian Pugwash Group. Fifty years
ago the Pugwash movement was founded by prominent Eastern and Western
scientists at an historic meeting in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, in 1957. The group,
and its founder Sir Joseph Rotblat, was awarded the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for
its years of anti-nuclear work.
