TORONTO, July 23 /CNW/ -
WHAT: It's possible to help the planet, boost the local economy and drink
great wine, all at the same time. Ontario's VQA wines are made from 100%
local grapes harvested in places like our Greenbelt. Less travel means a
smaller carbon footprint. Buying local means supporting our farmers and
vintners. So whatever the colour, they're a greener choice.
Ontario's Greenbelt is 1.8 million acres of protected countryside,
including some of the most valuable viticultural land in Canada,
providing perfect conditions for creating award-winning, world-class
wines. We believe this is something to celebrate. And it seems that
consumers do, too: over 90% of central Ontarians want to buy local food
and wine, according to an October 2007 poll by Environics.
People who choose 'local' are people who know that living well doesn't
have to cost the earth. They enjoy refined, sophisticated lives without
compromising their values or the environment. The fresh, ripe tastes of
local Greenbelt fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses are perfect on
their own, but when expertly prepared and paired with an Ontario VQA
wine, they are out of this world.
WHEN, WHERE, WHO: Local Greenbelt VQA wines are available at your
neighbourhood LCBO store all-year round, but this special promotion runs
from July 20 through August 16. Look for vibrant necktags on VQA wines on
the shelves. Please see the list attached for participating Greenbelt VQA
wineries. Enjoy your old favourites, or try something new. Either way,
you can't go wrong.
To celebrate this initiative, we are inviting you to a media conference
on Friday, July 25, 2008 from 12-12:30 pm with wine and food sampling to
follow at the LCBO Summerhill store, 10 Scrivener Square at Yonge Street,
south of the Summerhill Subway stop in Toronto.
Speakers include the Honourable Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation,
Bob Clevely, Acting Senior Vice President, Retail Operations, LCBO, Paul
Speck of the Wine Council of Ontario, Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of Grape
Growers of Ontario, and Burkhard Mausberg, President of the Greenbelt
Delicious canapés have been specially created for this event by Owen
Steinberg, Executive Chef of Il Fornello with fresh, seasonal food from
the Greenbelt. Il Fornello is a leader in local food and drink; they
celebrated the first anniversary of their Ontario Menu last month.
Wrapping around the Golden Horseshoe, the Greenbelt is 1.8 million acres
of potential to make Ontario, and the earth, a better place. The Friends
of the Greenbelt Foundation is an independent charitable organization
established to support the vitality of the Greenbelt.
Media is invited for wine and food sampling.
