Media Advisory - Parliament Hill employees reject House of Commons recent proposal

OTTAWA, June 11 /CNW Telbec/ - House of Commons' employees in Ottawa are
no longer prepared to be used and disposed of at will by their employer.
Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) working at the
House of Commons have rejected the House's last offer tabled in contract
negotiations because it does not address the core concerns of many House
employees, including Seasonal Certified Indeterminate (SCI) workers. From one
day to the next, SCI employees can be sent home to collect unemployment and
like many employees on the Hill, they do not have any clear, objective or
transparent processes governing such fundamentals as hours of work scheduling
and job security.
Parliament Hill workers are not alone in finding these conditions
unacceptable. MPs and senators are behind their call for decent working
conditions. Liberal MP Marcel Proulx, NDP MP Paul Dewar and Bloc MP Carole
Lavallée will show their support during a press conference that will be held
on tomorrow, Tuesday, June 12, 2007, 11:00 at the Charles-Lynch Room on
Parliament Hill.
There are approximately 440 members of the Public Service Alliance of
Canada (PSAC) working at the House in four bargaining units, three of which
are currently negotiating a new collective agreement: the Operations Group
(Trades, Maintenance, Restaurant Services, Printing, Transport) with
approximately 300 members; the Reps and Texts Group, 60 members; and the
Postal Group, 50 members. Only the Scanners, 44 members, have reached an
agreement with their employer.
