Media advisory - No strike date set for school bus drivers

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 22 /CNW/ - First Student school bus drivers,
represented by the CAW, will not be going on strike in February, said CAW
Local 4268 President Len Poirier in an effort to quell public concern.
CAW Local 4268 represents 800 bus drivers and some shop personnel at six
locations - Bowmanville, Lindsay, Port Elgin/ Kincardine, Owen Sound,
Thornhill and Hawkestone (Mississauga), currently in negotiations.
Contrary to earlier media reports, the workers will not be walking off
the job and negotiations with First Student are scheduled to continue through
out the month of March. The Union has not yet met all the requirements
necessary.
Strike votes have taken place in four of the locations and supported by
an overwhelming strike mandate of 92-100 per cent. The earliest strike action
would be at the end of March, after March Break, confirmed Poirier.
Issues of concern for the drivers are health & safety, wages and general
respect for the workers who are considered 'part-time' yet often work full
shifts and bear the heavy responsibility for children's safety.
