VALCARTIER GARRISON, Feb. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - The 9th group of Canadian
Forces (CF) members based in the province of Quebec are set to arrive home
tomorrow following a rotation of more than six months in Afghanistan, during
which they worked to increase security and help in the country's
reconstruction. Media representatives are invited to come and meet the
soldiers and the families who have gathered to welcome them home.
Location: Valcartier Garrison
Date/time: Wednesday, February 27, 2008, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Among the soldiers coming home, let us note the presence of Colonel
Stéphane Lafaut, outgoing commanding officer of the Operational Mentoring and
Liaison Teams. These teams advise, mentor and assist the senior leadership of
the Afghanistan National Army in their capacity building. Colonel Lafaut will
briefly be available to talk about his mission and to answer questions from
members of the press on location.
In honour of their return, their buses will be escorted from Jean-Lesage
International Airport to Valcartier Garrison by a convoy of police vehicles
and light armoured vehicles. The route will be as follows:
Departure from airport, left onto Route de l'Aéroport heading north, then
right onto Boulevard Chauveau heading east until the Autoroute Henri IV
intersection. Take Autoroute Henri IV heading north and continue to
Valcartier Garrison's main entrance.
Members of the public who would like to show support and wave to the CF
members may do so along the convoy route. The population is also encouraged to
wear red clothing - a recognized sign of support to Canadian troops. The
convoy will leave Jean-Lesage International Airport for Valcartier Garrison
between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Media representatives who wish to attend the reunion of CF members and
their families at Valcartier are asked to contact the Public Affairs Office.
They must also come to the front gate of Valcartier Garrison on February 27 at
7:30 p.m. to be escorted to the designated area.
Note: In accordance with instructions from airport authorities, media
representatives will not be given access to Jean-Lesage International
