MEDIA ADVISORY - MINISTER RAYMOND BACHAND WILL LEAD MISSION TO RUSSIA AND ISRAEL

MONTREAL, Aug. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Raymond Bachand, Minister of Economic
Development, Innovation and Export Trade and Minister of Tourism, will be
leading an economic and technological mission this September. The minister
will visit Russia from September 12 to 19 and Israel from September 21 to 25.
The purpose of Minister Bachand's visit to Russia is to promote
investment and industrial partnership exchanges, as well as to encourage the
growth of trade relations in such areas as agri-food, energy, aerospace,
wood-frame housing, mining and recreation equipment and infrastructure. The
minister also hopes to intervene in particular to help Quebec companies obtain
contracts for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games to be held in Sotchi. Budgets for
the upgrading of communication and transportation infrastructure in
Russia-forecasted at US$1 billion over the next 10 years-could be a promising
opportunity for Quebec companies.
Along with Brazil, India and China, Russia is part of the emerging
economies of the BRIC nations. This country is the 13th most important market
for Quebec. In 2007, Quebec exports to Russia totalled $267.7 million or 26%
of all Canadian exports.
As for the mission to Israel, it is intended to promote exchanges with
Quebec, in particular in the areas of life sciences and venture capital, as
well lend support to Quebec businesses in developing export opportunities,
especially in the high-tech products, transportation and safety sectors. The
Minister will also take advantage of his visit to position Quebec as the most
dynamic Canadian province in terms of research and innovation.
The Israeli market is one of the most vibrant in the world, with a GDP
growth rate of over 5% in 2007. The country also boasts a high level of
research, both in volume and in quality. In 2007, R&D activity accounted for
4.5% of the GNP, making Israel the world leader in national R&D spending.
Currently, the country ranks fourth for Quebec exports in the Middle East.
The list of companies that will be accompanying the Minister to these two
destinations will be made available upon request once it is finalized.
