TORONTO, April 1 /CNW/ - Media representatives and photographers are
invited to attend the ceremonial groundbreaking for phase one of The Michener
Institute's Capital Development Project. The event will also mark the official
announcement of the CAE/Michener Centre for the Advancement of Simulation in
Health Care, and the launch of Michener's Capital Fundraising Campaign.
In attendance will be the Honourable David Caplan, Minister of Health and
Long-Term Care, Marc Parent, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating
Officer, CAE, and Dr. Paul Gamble, President and CEO, The Michener Institute.
The Michener Institute, along with the Province of Ontario, is ushering
in a new era of health education by building a 21st century team-based
learning facility for health care providers. The overall renovation of
Michener, originally built in 1972, will look to renew and upgrade the aging
physical infrastructure (architectural, mechanical, electrical, environmental,
and code related deficiencies) throughout 15 storeys and transform the 236,000
square foot space into a state-of-the-art school, modernized to support
interprofessional education, advanced infrastructural technologies, and
integrated simulated learning.
Michener's master plan Capital Development Project is estimated at $69
million, and the campus renovations will be approached in stages, led by
Toronto-based architects Diamond + Schmitt. Phase 1 of the retrofit is a
$10.73 million dollar plan, with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care,
and CAE having invested $6.27 and $3 million respectively.
Floor plans for the CAE/Michener Centre for the Advancement of Simulation
in Health Care will be showcased at the groundbreaking event. The Centre will
be located on the 3rd and 4th floors of Michener and, when completed in the
fall 2009, the Centre is expected to provide team-based simulated training to
more than 1,500 students and health care practitioners per year.
The Michener Institute will also launch the 'Stronger, Smarter, Better'
Capital Fundraising Campaign to raise much-needed investment capital for the
infrastructure enhancements to its unique vertical campus. When the total
renovation is complete, Michener will truly be a state-of-the-art facility for
interprofessional health care learning.
This is an RSVP only event. Media must RSVP by April 3, 2009, and submit
any requests for interviews with Marc Parent or Paul Gamble in writing at the
