Media Advisory - Memorandum of Understanding between the Assembly of First Nations and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada

TORONTO, March 3 /CNW/ - Phil Fontaine, National Chief of the Assembly of
First Nations (AFN), and Patricia Dillon, President of the Prospectors and
Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), will sign a Memorandum of
Understanding between their respective organizations at 3 p.m. on Tuesday,
March 4. The signing ceremony will be held during the annual PDAC Convention,
Trade Show, and Investors Exchange (March 2-5) and will take place in the
Ceremonial Circle at the ground floor entrance of the South Building of the
Metro Toronto Convention Centre, 222 Bremner Boulevard, Toronto.
The PDAC is working to encourage greater participation by Aboriginal
peoples in the mineral industry and to foster understanding and cooperation
between Aboriginal communities and mineral exploration and mining companies.
The association has a number of initiatives underway to achieve this goal,
including calls to Canadian governments for rapid resolution of land claims
and sharing of government resource revenues with Aboriginal peoples.
Last year National Chief Fontaine issued the Corporate Challenge, a
program to encourage companies to increase business activities with First
Nations and to establish working partnerships with Aboriginal communities.
The AFN and PDAC are in full agreement that First Nations and the mineral
industry are natural partners. In much of northern Canada, mineral exploration
and development is one of the few business enterprises capable of generating
the wealth necessary for remote Aboriginal communities to achieve economic
self-sufficiency.
Under this Memorandum of Understanding, the PDAC and the AFN commit to
working together to encourage greater participation by Aboriginal peoples in
the mineral industry, foster partnerships between companies and communities,
and to cooperate on public policy issues of mutual interest.
