Media Advisory - Island tour by CUPE BC president to focus on economy



    Public meetings in five municipalities to canvass residents on local
    alternatives to P3s

    BURNABY, BC, Jan. 22 /CNW/ - CUPE BC president Barry O'Neill is hitting
the road to talk about local investment and alternatives to privatization in
B.C. communities.
    In a provincial tour of municipalities that begins next week on Vancouver
Island, O'Neill will be meeting with local mayors and councilors, as well as
chambers of commerce, and holding public meetings on each evening of the tour.
The public meetings will feature a presentation and discussion led by O'Neill
called "Investing in Our Communities: Local Solutions for B.C.
Municipalities."
    In Nanaimo and Courtenay, O'Neill will be joined at the public meetings
by United Steelworkers District 3 director Steve Hunt, who will highlight the
impact of the current state of the forest industry on the Island economy.
    The first leg of the tour begins on Monday, January 28 in Duncan followed
by stops in Port Alberni (Jan 29), Campbell River (Jan 30), Nanaimo (Jan 31),
and Courtenay (Feb 1).
    O'Neill will be available for media interviews throughout the week.
